Biographical Information[edit]

Eduard Pirvu has been one of Romania's top baseball players in the first quarter of the 21st Century.

He attended the MLB European Academy in 2012, the only Romanian invited that year. [1] He also attended in '13. [2] He pitched for Germany's Stuttgart Reds in 2014, allowing 7 runs in 2 1/3 IP. [3]

Pitching for the Romanian national team in the 2014 C-Level European Championship, he was 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA, beating Hungary. He also played short, batting .235/.364/.412 with six runs and five RBI in five games, fielding .882 and going 2-for-2 in steal attempts. He tied Aric Weinberg for second in the event with three doubles, was 6th in ERA (between Peter Luptak and Rok Cucek), tied for second with 10 K and tied for second with three games pitched. [4]

In the 2016 C-Level European Championship, he allowed five runs in seven (though he struck out 10) in a no-decision against Poland and was 4 for 9 with a double, two runs and two RBI. He ranked sixth in batters fanned. [5] He had a 1.50 ERA for Team Europe in the 2016 Asia Winter Baseball League, tying Yankees farmhand Artur Strzalka for the team lead. [6]

He signed with Italy's Parma club for the 2018 Serie A1, going 1-0 with a save and a 1.85 ERA. He was cut by the team, though, because he left to play for Romania in the C-Level Euros, thus missing their trip to the 2018 Italian Series. [7] Despite that, he was among the league leaders in ERA (5th, between former major leaguer Scott Richmond and Cuban leaguer Erly Casanova) and 6th in opponent average (.191). [8] He was the second Romanian to pitch in Italy's top loop, following Mihai Burlea. In the 2018 C-Level European Championship that cost him his job in Italy, he struck out 15 in a 3-hit complete game win over Hungary. His lone hit in eight at-bats was a homer. He was named Best Pitcher of the event. In the round-robin, he led in ERA (.29 ahead of Maksym Lisnytskyi), homers hit (tied), lowest average (.097, .033 ahead of Lisnytskyi) and strikeouts (one ahead of Giorgi Jalabadze). In the title game, he lost a 3-2 duel to Sergii Shtapura of Ukraine when rain ended the game after six. [9]

Pirvu found another home in Italy for 2019, signing with the Redipuglia Rangers. He was 4-6 with a 4.63 ERA and struck out 67 batters in 60 1/3 IP. He was 4th in IP (between José Escalona and former NPB hurler Alessandro Maestri), 5th in K (between Jorge Hernández and Maestri), tied for third in wins (behind Carlos Quevedo and Maestri), tied for 7th in starts and tied for second in losses (two behind Hernandez). [10] In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he lost a 1-0 duel to Belarus in which he fanned 18. He had a 2.79 ERA for the tourney and struck out 21 in 9 2/3 IP. He was 5th in ERA (between Kostiantyn Chukhas and Ilya Sladzinski), 5th in opponent average (.171, between Chukhas and Yauheni Kurhun), 5th in IP (between Edvardas Matusevičius and Mateusz Szustek) and first in strikeouts (one ahead of Kurhun). [11]

The right-hander again struck out 21 at his next event, the 2021 European Championship Qualifier; he was 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 14 innings, losing to Marius Balandis and Lithuania and beating Radoslaw Zajda and Poland (he also hit three doubles that game and finished at .333/.364/.667). Between all five qualifiers, he was third in innings (after Jakub Ižold and Christian Bokich), fourth in strikeouts (between Dimitri Kourtis and Balandis) and tied for second in doubles (one shy of Tom Roulis). [12] He was back on the hill for the 2022 European Championship Qualifiers, dropping the opener to Switzerland. [13]
