2018 C-Level European Championship
The 2018 C-Level European Championship was held July 23 to July 28, 2018 in Ireland and Ukraine.
In Ireland, it came down to two teams dominated by American ringers. Republic of Ireland swept their way to the title, defeating Greece. It marked a fast fall for Greece, which had played in every European Championship from 2010-2016 before finishing last in the 2017 B-Level European Championship to fall to the C Level. In the finale, Ireland pounded Greece 12-2 as Conor McNamara outpitched independent league veteran Jonathan Kountis. Brian McAuliffe (.650/.708/1.050, 9 R, 14 RBI in 5 G) won MVP honors while Keelan Smithers (0.00) led in ERA. Greece did have the leading batter, Harvard graduate Max Warren. Rouding out the pool were Finland (2-2), Slovenia (1-3) and Norway (0-4).
In the Ukraine, the host Ukraine went 5-0, though they edged Romania in the finale, 3-2, as Serhii Shtapura outpitched Eduard Pirvu (who won Best Pitcher honors, but was promptly released by his Italian Baseball League club for leaving the squad to appear for Romania). Ukraine thus defended their spot from the 2017 B-Level Euros. Roman Boiko (.667) was named leading batter, Oleksandr Mamontov was named Outstanding Defensive Player and Kostiantyn Chukhas (.300/.467/.700, 6 R in 4 G; 1-0, 0.00 ERA) was named MVP. The other entrants were Georgia (2-2), Estonia (2-2) and Hungary (0-4).
