Ireland, or more formally the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann), is a country that covers approximately five-sixths of the island of Ireland, off the coast of Europe. The rest of the island constitutes Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

Players of Irish origin were numerous in the early days of baseball. Most Irish-born major leaguers were born in the 19th century, although pitchers Joe Cleary and P.J. Conlon were born in the 20th century (the latter in Northern Ireland).
