Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Darrell Turner played in the Chicago Cubs system from 1973 to 1979. He reached Triple-A in parts of two seasons.

Drafted by Chicago in the second round of the 1973 amateur draft, just ahead of Fred Lynn, Turner was 1-2 with a save and a 2.32 ERA that summer for the GCL Cubs. In 1974, he was 3-18 with a 3.73 ERA for the 37-94 Key West Conchs, walking 75 in 135 IP. He tied Byron Wilkerson for the most losses by a Cubs farmhand and was third in walks behind Brian Vernoy and Willie Prall. He also tied Wilkerson for the Florida State League lead in losses. He tied Wilkerson, Carlos Sanchez and John McAllen for the most losses in minor league baseball. In '75, he was with the Key West Cubs (8-9, 4.18) and Wichita Aeros (1-1, 6.48) with 76 BB to 55 K in 152 IP. He tied Herb Hutson and Dan Corder for 4th in the Cubs system in walks.

In 1976, Turner had a 4-12, 5.20 record with 66 walks in 123 innings for the Midland Cubs. He tied Balor Moore for 6th in the Texas League in losses and tied Dave Geisel for 5th in the Cubs farm chain in that department. He didn't have his first winning season until 1977, when he went 13-8 with a 5.03 ERA for Midland. He tied Herman Segelke for the most wins by a Cubs minor leaguer though his 185 hits allowed were second to Chuck Rogers. In the TL, he was in good company, tying Danny Darwin for second in wins, one behind Mike Scott. He was also second in the TL in hits allowed and third in runs allowed (97, behind Jim Dorsey and Jeff Albert. In 1978, the Floridian was with Midland (5-5, 4.43) and Wichita (3-3, 4.96). He finished up his career with the 1979 Midland club, going 3-4 with 8 saves and a 5.56 ERA. He tied Mark Mercer for 7th in the TL in saves and was third in the Cubs system behind Bob McClure and Mike Allen.

He went 41-62 with nine saves and a 4.61 ERA in 177 games (107 starts) in his seven-year career. He walked 378 and struck out 338 in 775 innings while allowing 874 hits.
