Biographical Information[edit]

"The greatest amateur pitcher I ever saw." - Gary Hughes, special assistant to a Cubs General Manager, quoted in a 2005 article here

Herman Segelke came up to the Chicago Cubs at the start of 1982, on a team that was rebuilding after a disastrous 1981 season when they posted a .369 winning percentage. At age 24, he and Lee Smith were the youngest pitchers on the staff. He only stayed in the major leagues for less than a month, with no decisions and an ERA of 8.31 in 3 games.

He was the 7th overall pick by the Cubs in the 1976 amateur draft. From 1976 to 1982 he moved his way up the Cubs minor league organization, going 13-8 in Single A ball in 1977 and 13-8 again in Double A ball in 1979. After his time with the Cubs organization, he spent 1983 and 1984 in the San Francisco Giants organization playing for the Phoenix Giants.

In 1989 he was "arguably the most feared and intimidating pitcher in the history of the Bay Area Senior Men's Baseball League", going 13-0.
