Biographical Information[edit]

John McAllen pitched in the San Diego Padres system from 1973 to 1977. He spent his final two seasons at Triple-A, but never ascended to the majors. He was taken in the 9th round of the 1973 amateur draft, ahead of future All-Stars Bob Stanley and Wayne Gross.

In his rookie campaign, McAllen went 9-2 with 11 complete games in 16 games (12 starts) for the Low-A Walla Walla Padres. The next year, he went 5-18 with a 4.50 ERA for the Double-A Alexandria Aces, tying Byron Wilkerson, Carlos Sanchez and Darrell Turner for the minor league lead in losses. Switching to the bullpen in 1975, he went 5-3, 4.42, 4-0, 4.10 and 0-3, 5.88 over his final three years, respectively, to wrap up his career.

Overall, he went 23-26 with 20 complete games and a 4.22 ERA in 140 games (41 starts). In 446 innings, he allowed 474 hits and 211 walks (1.536 WHIP), while striking out 244 batters. At Triple-A, he was 4-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 58 games (4 starts) for the Hawaii Islanders.
