Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Brian Vernoy was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 1st round, 15th overall, of the 1972 amateur draft - one pick after pitcher Scott McGregor and a few picks ahead of outfielder Chet Lemon. He spent four years in the minor leagues, never playing past A ball.

With the GCL Cubs in 1972, Vernoy was 2-3 with a 2.57 ERA in 13 games (12 starts). He also was 6 for 20 with a double. He was 5-8 with 69 strikeouts, 60 walks and a 3.90 ERA in 21 games (20 starts, 113 IP total) for the Quincy Cubs in 1973 and in 1974, he went 3-5 with a 3.82 ERA in 31 games (17 starts) for the Key West Conchs. In 120 innings, he allowed only 109 hits, but walked 102 batters and struck out 85. He led the Florida State League in walks, 10 ahead of #2 Frank MacCormack. Among Cub farmhands, he had 17 more walks than runner-up Willie Prall.

He was 5-3 with a 4.07 ERA in 22 games (5 starts) for the Conchs in 1975, walking 61 batters in 73 innings, while allowing 56 hits and K-ing 37.

Overall, Vernoy was 15-19 with a 3.70 ERA in 87 games (54 starts). He walked 255 in 362 innings.
