Biographical Information

Tomáš Ondra has pitched in the Bundesliga and Extraliga and for the Czech national team.

He was 0-1 with a 12.38 ERA for the Arrows Ostrava as a 16-year-old in 2012. He improved to 3-1, 3.93 the next season. He went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (2 UER) in 15 1/3 IP in the 2013 18U European Championship. He won the ERA title, .64 ahead of Sven Schüller. He also tied for 2nd in K (14), was second to Hugo Garnero in opponent average (.115) and tied for the win lead with Eric Izquierdo, Vladislav Govaradlo, Kaj Timmermans and Jordy van den Heuvel. He was 0-1 with a 8.10 ERA for the Czechs in the 2013 World Junior Championship, losing to Canada.

For Ostrava in 2014, he had a 3-2, 3.46 record, finishing 6th in ERA (between Daniel Vítek and Marek Červenka). He fell to 3-2, 5.43 in '15. Moving to Germany's Dortmund Wanderers for 2016, he was 1-9 with a 6.75 ERA and also played the outfield regularly, hitting .342/.437/.452. He was 10th in OBP and OPS but led in losses. Returning to Ostrava, he was moved to the bullpen the next summer, going 0-1 with 5 saves and a 1.61 ERA. He was one save behind leader Marko Vykoukal. He was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in the 2017 U23 European Championship, tying for 9th in K (11).

Ondra was 4-1 with two saves and a 3.08 ERA in 2018, tying for 8th in wins while only John Hussey had more saves. He pitched six shutout innings in the 2018 CEB Cup to beat Raudelin Legra and the Templiers de Sénart. Had he qualified, he would have led the event in ERA; that instead went to Kenny Vandenbranden. He then returned to Germany, this time with the Haar Disciples. In '19, he was 4-5 with a 5.06 ERA. He tied for the most starts (12) and was 4th with 80 IP, between Antonio Horvatić and Gian Rizzo.

The right-handed hurler was 1-0 with a 6.35 ERA in a COVID-shortened 2020 season for the Regensburg Legionäre. The next year, he had a 1-0, 1.93 record in limited time for Regensburg. He then returned for a third stint in the Extraliga, this time with Cardion Hroši Brno. In 2022, he had a 4.05 ERA, again in limited work. In 2023, he was 7-2 with a 2.87 ERA. He led in WHIP (.68, .07 ahead of Jhenderson Hurtado), had the best K/BB ratio (44:1, well ahead of #2 Jeff Barto), was second to Lukáš Ercoli in K and tied for third in wins.

Making the Czech team for the 2023 European Championship, he went six scoreless (2 H, 0 BB, 7 K) before Lukáš Hlouch and Filip Čapka closed out an opening shutout win over Austria's Christian Tomsich. In the 5th/6th place game, he fanned seven in five innings and allowed one unearned run to beat Israel and Itai Spinoza. He tied for the win lead (with Pablo Guillén, Carlos García, Ondřej Satoria, Chris Messer and James Sanders), tied Ben Couvreur and Tomsich for 10th in IP, tied Couvreur for the best ERA and was 4th in strikeouts.
