Biographical Information[edit]

Ben Couvreur has pitched in the French Division I and for the French national team.

In the 2021 U15 European Championship, he had a 6.30 ERA. [1] He allowed 3 hits, 3 walks and one unearned run in 4 2/3 IP in the 2022 U18 European Championship, when he was only 15, striking out 10. He took a tough loss to Spain. He was also 2-for-6 on offense. He led France in Ks, one ahead of Mathis Nayral. [2] During the 2022 U15 Baseball World Cup, he was 1-1 with 13 K in 10 2/3 IP. All four runs he allowed were unearned and he no-hit Guam. He was also 3-for-11 with 3 walks, a triple and a run. He tied Shintaro Sakamoto and Daniel Sobotka for the event lead in strikeouts and won the Best Pitcher award. [3]

Couvreur made his Division I debut in 2023. He was 2-2 with a 2.68 ERA for the Barracudas de Montpellier, striking out 70 in 43 2/3 IP. He allowed a .147 average but walked 33. He allowed the lowest average in France's top loop (.009 ahead of Yaferson Lopez), was 8th in K (between minor league veterans Anderson Vera and Kevin Canelon) and tied Daniel Gosselin for second in appearances (13). [4] He was named the finals MVP as the Barracudas won their first title in 28 years. [5] In the 2023 U23 European Championship, he had a 2.10 ERA. [6] Still only 16 years old, he made France's senior team, for the 2023 European Championship. He wasn't riding the pine either. Starting against Croatia, he retired Kruno Gojković to open the game. Slobodan Gales doubled but he got former Angels farmhand Jose Herrera and former US collegian Petar Rumora to end the frame, the latter by K. He wound up going 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing only three hits and no runs (though he did walk six). Esteban Prioul took over and the young Couvreur got the victory over former Marlins minor leaguer Jose Diaz. He then started the 7th/8th place game versus Sweden. He allowed only one hit (to Jeff Pruitt) in 4 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out four, to outduel veteran Moisses Pargas; Nathan Laot took over and got credit for the victory. He tied Tomáš Ondra and Christian Tomsich for 10th in the Euros in IP and tied Ondra for the ERA lead, though he also tied Alex Ogg for second in walks issued (one shy of Ádám Piros). [7]

He tore a ligament in his elbow in 2024, sidelining him. [8]
