- 1901 - John McGraw (pictured) tries to sign African-American second baseman Charlie Grant, claiming he is an Indian named "Chief Tokohama".
- 1950 - Katsuki Tokura of the Mainichi Orions hits the first home run in Pacific League history while birthday boy Yoshiyuki Iwamoto of the Shochiku Robins cracks the first homer in Central League history.
- 1981 - Johnny Mize and Rube Foster are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee.
- 1991 - Jim Palmer gets roughed up for five hits and two runs in two innings in a bid to come back after six seasons off. He retires again the next day.
- 2004 - In the first game to be played at PETCO Park, 40,106 fans watch Tony Gwynn's San Diego State Aztecs beat the University of Hawaii, 4-0, to shatter the college baseball attendance record of 27,673.
