Biographical Information[edit]
Submariner Seong-kil Kim played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years and Korea Baseball Organization for 7 years.
Kim was drafted by the Hankyu Braves in the 6th round of the 1977 NPB draft, and he had a 6.60 ERA in 9 games in 1980. His ERA was 4.40 in 15 games in 1981, and he pitched 29 games with a 4.50 ERA in 1983. He only had 3 appearances in 1984, and he recorded a 4.17 ERA in 21 games in 1985. Kim stayed in the minors in the most of the 1986 season, and he decided to go to Korea and joined the KBO. He signed with the Samsung Lions, and he had a 3.19 ERA in 11 games in 1987.
The Seto native went 8-4 with a 2.80 ERA and 6 saves in 1988, and he was 6th in ERA (between Hun-ki Kim and Yong-cheol Lee). He then improved to 14-11 with a 2.81 ERA in 1989, and he was 8th in ERA (between Hak-kil Yoon and Jin-woo Song), 8th in strikeouts (between Myeong-sun Ryu and Kye-hyun Cho) and 3rd in wins (tied with Sang-kun Lee and Hee-min Han). Kim was still a solid starter in 1990, and he was 13-6 with a 3.79 ERA. He ranked 5th in wins, tied with Yong-deok Han, Jung-hyun Park and Tae-il Lee.
Kim had his career year in 1991, and he went 16-12 with a 3.30 ERA and 18 saves in 52 appearances. As a swingman, he was totally overused and he even recorded 198 pitches in a game. He led the league in appearances, and he was 2nd in saves (9 behind Kyu-je Cho), 4th in wins (3 behind Dong-yeol Sun) and 4th in losses (3 behind Sam-heum Jeong). Kim was the last Japanese-Korean to get 10 wins in a season in KBO. He struggled in 1992 as his ERA rose to 5.17 in 17 games, and he was traded to the Ssangbangwool Raiders with Kyeong-sik Shin for a first round pick. Kim pitched 26 games with a 3.93 ERA in 1993, then he announced his retirement.
Overall, Kim was 54-46 with 39 saves and a 3.38 ERA, struck out 388 and pitched 925 innings in 7 seasons in the KBO. He was 1-7 with two saves and a 4.89 ERA in his career in NPB.
