Sang-yun Lee pitched in the KBO for 8 years.
Lee joined the Haitai Tigers when the KBO was founded in 1982, and he was 7-5 with a 3.88 ERA that season. He became the ace of Haitai in 1983, and he went 20-10 with a 2.67 ERA. He was 2nd in wins (10 behind Myeong-bu Chang), 9th in ERA (between Tae-hwan Hwang and Yong-nam Kim), 5th in complete games (14, 12 behind Chang) and 2nd in strikeouts (42 behind Chang). In the 1983 Korean Series, Lee started in Game 1 and completed the game with 4 runs allowed to beat the MBC Blue Dragons. He then pitched 4 innings with a run allowed to save Toshoku Uda's win in Game 3, and he pitched 8 innings with a run allowed in Game 4; the game wound up a historic 15-inning, 1-1 tie. Lee again notched a save for Uda, with 2 2/3 shutout innings in Game 5, to clinch his first title as the Tigers beat the MBC Blue Dragons in 5 games.
The Gwangju native was 10-13 with a 2.85 ERA and 8 saves in 1984, and he was 10th in ERA (between Il-eon Choi and Ho-kyun Lim), 3rd in saves (17 behind Seok-hwan Yoon) and 3rd in losses (tied with Dong-won Choi). He missed nearly the entire 1985 season due to injuries, and he went 10-5 with a 2.97 ERA in 1986. Lee allowed 3 runs in an inning in the 1986 Korean Series, and he got his second title as the Tigers beat the Samsung Lions in 5 games. He was 2-4 with a 4.93 ERA in 1987. Haitai won the 1987 Korean Series.
Lee bounced back in 1988 with a 16-6 record and a 2.89 ERA. He led the league in walks, and he ranked 2nd in wins (2 behind Hak-kil Yoon) and 8th in ERA (between Yong-cheol Lee and Hee-soo Moon). He surrendered 5 runs in 2 2/3 innings in the 1988 Korean Series, but he got his fourth title as the Tigers beat the Binggrae Eagles in 6 games. Lee only pitched 2 games in 1989, then he announced his retirement. Lee later became the pitching coach for the Tigers from 1990 to 2000 and the bench coach for them from 2001 to 2003. He was also the pitching coach for the KIA Tigers in 2004 and for the minor league team of the Samsung Lions in 2005.
Overall, Lee was 65-46 with a 3.13 ERA, struck out 483 and pitched 843 2/3 innings in 8 seasons in the KBO.
