1987 Korean Series

The 1987 Korean Series was the 5th Korean Series. A rematch of 1986, it again featured the Haitai Tigers beating the Samsung Lions. It was the first sweep ever in a Korean Series. Jun-hwan Kim hit two home runs for Haitai and was named Korean Series MVP.

Haitai, managed by Eung-ryong Kim, had gone 55-48-5 to finish second in the regular season, then beat the OB Bears 3 games to 2 in the playoffs. The team had three players who were named best at their position: 1B Sung-han Kim (.314/.378/.533, 15 HR), 3B Dae-hwa Han (.236/.347/.419) and OF Jong-mo Kim (.331/.377/.458). Dong-yol Son (14-2, 6 Sv, 0.89) led the league in ERA.

Samsung was guided by ?Young-kil Park? and had the best regular-season record at 64-44. They had five players be named best at their position: C Man-soo Lee (.344/.431/.579, 18 HR, a league-high 76 RBI), 2B Seong-rae Kim (.332/.413/.569, a league-best 22 HR), SS Jung-il Ryu (.287/.362/.364, the only starter to slug under .400), OF Hyo-jo Jang (.387/.461/.493, the batting titlist) and P Si-jin Kim (23-6, 3.12, the win leader).

The Series began on October 21, with Haitai winning 5-3, Dong-chul Cha getting the win and Si-jin Kim the loss. Dae-hwa Han hit a 2-run homer in the first and Sung-han Kim added a solo shot in the 8th for Haitai. The next day, Jung-soo Kim and the Tigers emerged with a 2-1 win over Motoyasu Kaneshiro; Dong-yol Son registered a save.

On October 24, at Kwangju Stadium, Man-soo Lee hit a 2-run homer in the top of the first, but Samsung failed to score again and Haitai had four unanswered runs. Hee-soo Moon got the win over Young-ho Kwon while Cha got the save. Jun-hwan Kim homered in the 4th to put the Tigers ahead for good. In the finale, Jung-soo Kim cruised to a 9-2 decision over Si-jin Kim, with Jun-hwan Kim contributing a 2-run dinger.
