1993 Korean Series

The 1993 Korean Series marked the 7th Korean Series title in 11 years for the Haitai Tigers. Jong-beom Lee was 9 for 29 with 7 steals to become the second rookie to win Korean Series MVP (the first was in 1986).

Haitai was managed by Eung-ryong Kim and finished first in the regular season at 81-42-3. They had five of the 11 Golden Glove winners: SS Jong-beom Lee (.280/.331/.432, 16 HR, 85 R, 73 SB), OF Jun-ho Jeon (.282/.363/.333, 75 SB), OF Soon-chul Lee (.253/.341/.392, 29 SB) and P Dong-yol Son (10-3, 31 Sv, 0.78). Jeon led the league in steals, edging out Jong-beom Lee in a speed-oriented offense. The pitching was strong and balanced, with six hurlers reaching double-digit wins. Kye-hyun Cho (17-6, 2.15) led the league in wins while Son led in saves and ERA.

The Samsung Lions were guided by Yong-deok Woo. They finished second at 73-48-5 then beat the LG Twins 3 games to 2 in the playoffs. They did have some strong pitchers like Jun Song (12-4, 2.07) and Sang-yeop Kim (13-6, 8 Sv, 2.58, a league-best 170 whiffs) but the team was led by their sluggers. 1B Seong-rae Kim hit .300/.395/.544 with a league-high 28 homers and 91 RBI to take the KBO MVP award while Ki-woong Kang (.325/.366/.501, 16 HR, 2nd in average) won the Gold Glove at 2B. Joon-hyuk Yang won the batting title (.341/.436/.598), hit 23 home runs and drove in 90.

The Series opened October 18 in Kwangju, with Samsung leading 1-0 at the 7th-inning break before Haitai scored 5 times in the next two innings. Cho got the win, Son the save. The next day, Samsung cruised to a 6-0 win behind Tae-han Kim's pitching. October 21 was a marathon 15-inning 2-2 tie, with neither team scoring after the sixth. Samsung took a 2 games to 1 edge on the 22nd, with Sang-yeop Kim beating flamethrower Dae-jin Lee.

On October 24, at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, Haitai won 4-2 behind Cho to even the Series, as he beat Lions ace Song. The next day, the Tigers won another 4-2 game, breaking a tie in the 8th. Seong-rae Kim became the oldest player (35 years, 5 months) to homer in a Korean Series to that point. On October 26, Haitai won their third straight, this time 4-1, with Son getting the win.
