1982 Korean Series

From BR Bullpen

The 1982 Korean Series was the first Korean Series. The OB Bears faced off with the Samsung Lions.

OB had finished first in the 1982 KBO at 56-24 under manager Yeong-duk Kim. They were led by KBO MVP Chul-soon Park (24-4, 1.84), the league leader in wins and ERA. The offense was solid as well with Woo-yol Kim (.310/.427/.533, 13 HR), Dong-kyun Yoon (.342/.428/.532), Kyung-sik Shin (.334/.379/.468) and Cheon-seo Koo (.308/.405/.421). The problem was the lack of a solid #2 pitcher after Park.

Samsung was 54-26 under skipper Young-mu Suh. Tae-soo Chang (.336/.454/.477, 34 SB) and Man-soo Lee (.289/.399/.500, 13 HR) were their offensive leaders. Yeong-ho Kwon (15-5, 2 Sv, 2.37), Kyu-bong Hwang (15-11, 11 Sv, 2.47), Nak-soo Song (8-3, 2 Sv, 2.81) and Sun-hee Lee (15-7, Sv, 2.91).

In game 1, October 5, the teams tied, 3-3, in 15 innings, an inauspicious start to the first Series. Hak-soo Ham hit the first homer in Series history, a two-run shot for Samsung in the 6th, one of only 3 Samsung hits, while OB had 15 hits. Kwon and Cheol-won Kang were the starting pitchers.
