Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Garry Maddox II is the son of long time Philadelphia Phillies centerfielder Garry Maddox. He peaked at AAA, in which he spent parts of four seasons.

After hitting .341 his last season in college, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Arizona Diamondbacks organization before Arizona was even playing on the major league level. He began his career with the High Desert Mavericks in 1997, hitting .306/.384/.469 with 12 triples, 89 runs and 25 steals in 33 tries. He led the young organization in triples. He tied Tarrik Brock and Norm Hutchins for 4th in the California League in three-baggers, trailing Joe Mathes, Chad Green and Tony Mota. In the outfield, he fielded .990 while playing mostly center field.

In 1998 he spent time in the D'Backs and Houston Astros chains, playing at the advanced A, AA and AAA levels with appearances for High Desert (5 for 8, 2 2B, HR, SB, BB), the Jackson Generals (.351/.384/.521, 20 R in 25 G) and the Tucson Sidewinders (.264/.309/.387 in 81 G). He spent all of 1999 with Arizona's first AA affiliate, the El Paso Diablos, hitting a solid .295/.344/.494 with 35 doubles, 9 triples, 15 home runs and 80 runs. He tied Cliff Brumbaugh for 6th in the Texas League in doubles and was 5th in triples.

Arizona then dealt Maddox to the Boston Red Sox for Javier Fuentes. He hit .275/.342/.361 in 100 games for the 2000 Trenton Thunder and also played 10 games in the Mexican League for the Sultanes de Monterrey (9 for 40, 2B). In 2001, he played for Trenton (.300/.386/.537 in 84 G) and the Pawtucket Red Sox (3 for 27, 8 K). Had he qualified, he would have tied Frank Figueroa for 9th in the Eastern League in average.

Let loose by Boston, he played in the independent leagues. He split 2002 between the Atlantic City Surf (56 G), Camden Riversharks (18 G) and Pennsylvania Road Warriors (13 G), all of the Atlantic League, hitting a combined .283/.358/.527 with 18 home runs. He tied for 11th in the circuit in long balls. In 2003, he moved to his father's old organization to conclude his career. He appeared for the Clearwater Threshers (6 for 22, 2 2B, HR, 4 BB), Reading Phillies (.289/.376/.544, 12 HR, 38 RBI in 50 G) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (.214/.237/.268 in 18 G).
