Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Mathes was up in the majors in 1912, 1914, and 1916, each time in a different league. Most of his at-bats were in the Federal League in 1914. As a 20-year-old rookie with Connie Mack's 1912 Athletics, he was one year younger than Stuffy McInnis and a couple years older than Herb Pennock.
After his major league days he managed for about a decade, and The Memoirs of Bing Devine says he ran the Cardinals minor league operations as well.
Mathes spent more than 40 years as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals ( -1976), for whom he found Red Schoendienst. He also scouted briefly for the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs (1977-1978).
