Biographical Information[edit]

Andrii Kostashchuk has pitched for the Ukrainian national team.

He pitched one shutout inning (1 H, 2 K) in the 2016 European Championship U21. [1] He was 0-1 with a 12.60 ERA in the 2018 European Junior Championship. [2] In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he worked three innings (1 H, 2 UER, 2 BB, 3 K). [3] He fared well in the 2019 European Championship U21, losing one-run games to Britain and Belgium (much more established baseball countries) and finishing 0-2 with a 2.31 ERA. He was 3rd in ERA (behind Paul Kirkpatrick and Artuur Driessens) for the event, though he tied Lilian Amoros for the most losses. [4]

Kostashchuk was 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in the 2021 European Championship Qualifier, losing to Bulgaria, but Ukraine won to go on to the 2021 European Championship. [5] In the 2021 Euros, he had a rough first game. Relieving Heorhii Hvrytishvili in the 8th with a 3-2 lead against Croatia, he retired Petar Rumora but Slobodan Gales singled, Antonio Horvatić doubled and Ronnie Krsolovic hit a sacrifice fly to tie it. Kostashchuk then got Andrew Jones to end the inning. In the 9th, the wheels really came off as he went from a blown save to a loss. Andrija Tomić singled and Kruno Gojković got a bunt hit. Jose Herrera doubled in a pair, Philip Smith singled and Rumora's sacrifice fly made it 6-3. Gales singled and he hit Horvatić. After a two-run single by Krsolovic, he was replaced by Myroslav Zhylka. The inherited runner scored, giving him seven runs allowed in 1 1/3 IP. His other game went better, against Germany. Relieving Zhylka with a 12-5 deficit in the 6th, one out and two on, he served up a 2-run double to Pascal Amon and hit Lukas Jahn but retired Alex Schmidt and Shawn Larry. In the 7th, Eric Brenk singled, Danilo Weber struck out and Lou Helmig flew out. Vincent Ahrens drew a walk and Elias von Garßen singled to force the mercy rule and end the game. His 27.00 ERA for the Euros was not Ukraine's highest; he was 7th on their 11-man staff in ERA. [6]
