Biographical Information[edit]

Philip Smith has played for the Croatian national team.

Smith hit .426 and slugged .662 as a high school senior. He redshirted his first year at Kent State. [1] He was 4 for 15 in 2010 and 3 for 11 with a walk and homer in 2011. [2] Transferring to Northern Kentucky, he became a regular and batted .299/.356/.524. [3]

At the recommendation of long-time Croatian national team player Jimmy Summers, Olimpija Karlovac signed Smith for the 2015 season. [4] He hit .313/.421/.375 in the 2016 CEB Cup. [5] He was Croatia's starting catcher in the 2016 European Championship and hit .375/.423/.708 with two homers and 8 RBI in 7 games, though he allowed 12 steals in 13 tries. He led Croatia in RBI (two ahead of fellow Ohio native RJ Vukovich), slugging (.186 ahead of Andrija Tomić) and homers (with two of their four) and was second to Kruno Gojković in average (by .105) and OBP (by .129). He had four hits, two runs and three RBI in a rout of Greece. He homered off Denis Leonov of Russia and off Conrad Cornell of Great Britain (in the 9th to avoid a shutout). For the event, he was 7th in slugging (between Oscar Angulo and Nateshon Thomas), tied for 2nd in homers (two behind Kalian Sams) and led with 3 passed balls. [6]

In the 2017 CEB Cup, he batted .286/.375/.571 for Karlovac. [7] While the team was last at the 2018 CEB Cup, he put on quite a show on offense. He was 12 for 17 with two doubles, two homers and five walks for a .706/.773/1.176 batting line with 9 runs and 5 RBI in five games. He allowed 17 steals in 18 tries, though. He led the event in average (.095 ahead of Terrell Joyce), OBP (.106 ahead of Mohamed Baoui), runs (tied with Joyce), hits (one ahead of Joyce and Steven De Lannoy), . He was second in slugging (.491 behind Joyce), tied for 3rd in home runs (behind Joyce and Slobodan Gales), tied Damir Karin and Alexander Perdomo for 3rd in walks, was second in total bases (10 shy of Joyce). He won the event's Best Hitter award. [8]
