Biographical Information[edit]
Conrad Cornell was on the British national team.
Cornell played baseball and football in high school. He hit .308/.345/.385 as a college freshman and pitched a scoreless inning. In 2016, he was 1-1 with a 8.41 ERA for Mercer and was 0 for 6 at the plate. [1] He played for the London Mets that summer, hitting .464/.516/.571 in 31 plate appearances.
He then was with the British team for the 2016 European Championship, one of numerous Americans on the team who had a British passport. He was a two-way player. In his debut, he hit 6th and played right field, hitting into an error by Diegomar Markwell, grounding out and striking out (versus Berry van Driel). His first pitching appearance wound up with a loss despite a decent outing; relieving Daniel Cooper with a 2-2 tie in the 6th against Germany, he allowed one run in three, when Max Boldt singled in Philip Schulz. He gave up 3 hits and a walk. His first hit was a big one; down 6-5 in the 10th, he singled off Sweden's Per Sjörs to score Juan Diaz with the tying run. He got the save in Cody Chartrand's 6-2 win over Croatia, working a scoreless 7th and 8th before Philip Smith homered in the 9th following an error. For the Euros, he was 2 for 12 with a walk and a RBI and had a 4.70 ERA in three pitching stints. He tied Matthew Maitland for the team lead in games pitched and had their lone save. [2]
Back as a position player as a college junior, he hit .261/.346/.391 followed by .228/.254/.263 as a senior. In the 2019 European Championship, he backed up Richard Brereton in left field. He only played one game, against Sweden. He again had Sjörs's number, drawing a walk and singling his first two trips to the plate, stealing two bases and scoring a run. He was retired his last three times up, by Sjörs, Niklas Melin and Jakob Syrén before being replaced in left by Jamie Dix. [3]
He has also been a Miracle League volunteer.
