Biographical Information[edit]
Andrew Romo pitched as high as AAA; his brother Sergio Romo was an All-Star in the majors. [1]
Romo was roughed up in his pro debut with the 2008 Yuma Scorpions (2-2, 10.93 ERA, 2.29 WHIP). He began 2009 with the Tucson Toros (1 R in 3 IP) then was signed by the San Francisco Giants. He split time between the AZL Giants (1-0, 5.09 in 12 G) and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (0 R in 1 IP). He spent 2010 with Salem-Keizer (2-2, Sv, 2.19 in 12 G), San Jose Giants (0-2, 8.22 in 3 G) and Fresno Grizzlies (5.73 ERA in 7 G).
Let go by the Giants, he returned to Yuma and was 5-6 with a 4.55 ERA in 2011, fanning 86 in 85 innings but hitting 18 batters. He was 7th in the North American League in Ks (between Alex Concepcion and Kurt Houck) and 2nd in hit batsmen (2 behind Jorge Quintero). After not playing in 2012, he struggled for the '13 Amarillo Sox (1-1, 8.71 ERA, 36 H in 20 2/3 IP).
Due to conflict between the Mexican League and the Mexican baseball federation, the Mexican national team had to rely on Mexican-Americans for the 2015 Premier 12 and Romo was one of the players to get picked. His first game, he came up huge in the quarterfinals. Relieving Miguel Pena in the 7th with a 3-1 deficit against unbeaten Team Canada (5-0), he retired all five batters he faced (Gareth Morgan, Skyler Stromsmoe, Sean Jamieson, former MLBer Pete Orr and future MLBer Tyler O'Neill) while Mexico scored three to take the lead. Brennan Bernardino closed it out, giving Romo the win and eliminating Canada. He also pitched well in a 6-1 loss to Team USA, giving up two hits in 1 2/3 shutout innings, pitching between Esau Madrigal and Enrique Garcia. [2]
He pitched briefly for the 2017 Pericos de Puebla, giving up 10 runs in 11 innings.
