Biographical Information

Starting pitcher Miguel Pena played in the Boston Red Sox minor league system from 2011 to 2014, then had a long career in the Mexican League. He was banned three times.

He was originally taken by the Washington Nationals in the 5th round of the 2009 amateur draft, ahead of first baseman Brandon Belt and pitcher Louis Coleman, among others, but opted not to sign. He was then taken by the San Diego Padres in the 13th round of the 2010 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher A.J. Griffin, but again did not sign. He finally signed after being taken in the 6th round of the 2011 amateur draft by the Red Sox, one pick after infielder Marcus Semien. The signing scout was Matt Dorey.

Pena began his career with a 2.35 ERA in 5 games (2 starts) for the Lowell Spinners. In 2012, he was 8-8 with a 3.01 ERA in 21 games (19 starts) for the GCL Red Sox and Greenville Drive, earning a spot on the South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star team. With the Salem Red Sox and Portland Sea Dogs in 2013, Pena posted a 4.29 ERA in 18 starts. He received his second ban in April of that year for testing positive for a "drug of abuse," which earned him a 50-game suspension. He began 2014 with Portland, but was banned again, this time for 100 games, for again using a "drug of abuse."

In 2017, he was the ace of the Toros de Tijuana when they won the Mexican League title. He went 11-2, 2.77 in 20 starts and was the winning pitcher in the clinching game of the league finals on September 10th, defeating the Pericos de Puebla, 15-3.
