2005 World Youth Championship
The 2005 World Youth Championship was held in August 2005 in Mexico.
The USA's run of three straight World Youth titles came to an end. After a 7-0 start, in which they had scored 98 runs, they were blanked by Cuba's Freddy Asiel Álvarez on four hits in the Gold Medal game, with Álvarez whiffing nine. The US's Robert Stock matched Freddy for three shutout innings before giving up three runs in the fourth; he was pitching on just one days' rest.
Other notable players for the USA included OF Freddie Freeman (.548, slugging percentage over 1, 16 RBI), Blake Beavan (3-0, 1.10, 22 K in 16 IP, .545 average), 2B Christian Colon (.517, 14 R), 3B Josh Vitters (.355, 6 2B), SS Mike McGee (.360), OF Brett Krill (16 R, 11 RBI, 3 HR), Seth Blair (1-0, 0.00) and Brett DeVall (1-0, 1.29).
Others playing in the tournament included Taiwan's Chia-Chu Chen, Po-Ting Hsiao and Chih-Lung Huang, the Netherlands' Zaïr Koeiman, Brazil's Felipe Sales and Rômulo Shindo and Australia's Tim Stanford
