Biographical Information[edit]
Freddy Asiel Álvarez was 11-12 with a 4.41 ERA in his first three seasons for Villa Clara in the Cuban Serie Nacional. In the 2005 World Youth Championship, he fanned nine in a four-hit shutout of Team USA in the Gold Medal game, stopping a previously unbeaten American team that had been averaging 14 runs per contest. He was with Cuba for the 2006 World Junior Championship. In 2008-2009, the youngster stepped up, going 7-2 with a 3.40 ERA and helping his team to a second-place finish. He was 5th in the league in winning percentage and 10th in ERA. Álvarez was then put on Cuba's team for the 2009 World Port Tournament, going 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA; one negative was six walks to four strikeouts in 12 1/3 IP.
Álvarez was only 3-10 despite a 3.82 ERA in 2009-2010. He tied for third in the league in losses and was second with 20 hit batsmen. He was back in form by the finals, starting game one of the championship against the Industriales Lions and throwing a fine game; he got a no-decision and Villa Clara won the game.
