Biographical Information[edit]

Po-Ting Hsiao is the cousin of Yi-Jie Hsiao. He is noted for his defensive ability. He was an infielder for Taiwan in the 2005 World Youth Championship and 2006 World Junior Championship. After Chung-Shou Yang withdrew from Taiwan's provisional roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic after the roster deadline had passed, the officials allowed Taiwan to replace Yang with Hsiao. Hsiao did not make the final cut, though.

He was excellent in the 2010 Haarlem Baseball Week: 12 for 24, 4 BB, 2 2B, 6 R, 5 RBI in 7 G, though he fielded .889. He led in average (.048 over Donal Duarte), tied Danel Castro for second in slugging (behind Alexei Bell), led in OBP (.049 over former major leaguer Eugene Kingsale), led in OPS, tied for 7th in runs, was 3rd in hits (behind Bell and Duarte), tied Castro for 5th in total bases, tied for 5th in RBI and tied Taed Moses for the most errors. He won Haarlem Baseball Week Best Hitter, an honor that had previously gone to major leaguer Chris Sabo.

In the 2010 Intercontinental Cup, he was 5 for 9 with a run and one error in 7 chances. Despite getting three hits in the round-robin phase against Italy, he did not start the Bronze Medal game, a 4-3 loss to Italy. He did bat for Chih-Kang Kao in the 9th and singled off Alessandro Maestri but was stranded. He hit .355/.394/.419 in the 2011 World Port Tournament, fielding .919. He tied Rusney Castillo for 3rd in hits (12) and total bases (14) and led all players with 33 assists, though he also tied for the most errors (3).

Hsiao produced at a .200/.333/.250 clip with 5 runs and 4 RBI in the 2011 Baseball World Cup, fielding .909 as Taiwan's starting shortstop. He led the team in runs, but four came in a romp of Greece and only one in the other five games, though that was their only run in a 2-1 loss to Shairon Martis and the Dutch national team. He had his second big Haarlem Baseball Week in 2012, batting .368/.455/.526, though he had no runs and one RBI in five games as the rest of Taiwan's offense sputtered and fielding remained a concern (.885). He won the Carl Angelo Award as the most popular player in the event, the first Taiwanese player to take that honor. He was 6th in the tournament in average, 7th in slugging, tied for 7th in OBP, tied for 6th with 7 hits, tied for second with 3 doubles (even with Trea Turner and Rudy van Heydoorn), tied for 5th in total bases and led in miscues. He won Bronze in the 2013 East Asian Games.

Hsiao was 1 for 3 in the 2014 Asian Games, backing up Yen-Wen Kuo at second base. In the 2015 World Port Tournament, he batted .313/.313/.438 and fielded .920, leading Taiwan in average and slugging. It was his fourth trip to Holland with the Taiwanese team and the third time in which he posted their best average (frequent infield mate Han Lin led the team at the 2011 World Port Tournament). Hsiao was 2 for 3 with a run, RBI and 6 error-free chances in the 2015 Asian Championship, backing up minor leaguers Yu-Cheng Chang at short and Tzu-Wei Lin at second. He batted .308/.367/.462 in the 2017 Asian Championship and did not make an error; he scored two runs in their 3-2 win over defending champion South Korea. He scored five runs overall, second on Taiwan, one behind Tzu-Chieh Lin. He did not get an at-bat in the Gold Medal Game loss to Japan.
