1990 Caribbean Series
(Redirected from 1990 Serie del Caribe)
The 1990 Caribbean Series (Serie del Caribe) was the twentieth edition of the second stage of the Caribbean Series. In a botched experiment the series was moved to Miami, FL in the United States. All games were played in the Orange Bowl, which had not been used for baseball in 34 years, from February 2 to February 7. The series featured four teams from Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The Leones del Escogido of the Dominican League won the series and were managed by Felipe Alou. The Most Valuable Player was Gerónimo Berroa, an outfielder with the Leones del Escogido.
Only about 50,000 fans showed up during the seven-day Series and the inadequate field led to high-scoring contests. There were a record 48 homers in the Series, 18 more than had been hit in the 1987 Caribbean Series and the 8 homers in the finale were a record. The Leones del Escogido went 5-1 to take the title, beating the Puerto Rican entry 16-5 in the last game. Berroa, the Series MVP, launched four homers, drove in 8 and batted .300. In the deciding game, he homered twice and drove in five.
