Miami Orange Bowl
(Redirected from Orange Bowl)
Although mainly famous as a football stadium, the Miami Orange Bowl, which was located in Miami, FL, has been the host to baseball games in its history.
On August 7, 1956 the Miami Marlins, in its first year in the International League, played a charity game versus the Columbus Jets, winning 6-2. The attendance for that game was 51,713 and a pregame show featured jazz singer Cab Calloway and Merv Griffin. Satchel Paige pitched into the 8th inning to earn the win and drove in three runs with a double to left-center field.
In 1990, the stadium was the host to the Caribbean Series, marking the first time the series was played outside of the Caribbean. In 1991, it was held at Bobby Maduro Miami Stadium, after it was decided that the outfield distances at the Orange Bowl (particularly in left field) were not entirely appropriate for baseball.
The stadium was built in 1937 and was the home of the University of Miami Hurricanes football team through the 2007 season. The stadium was also the home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins from 1966-1986. The stadium was completely demolished in 2008.
