1977 Central American Games

The 1977 Central American Games were the first of the new Central American Games (the Central American and Caribbean Games used to be the Central American Games and featured baseball twice under that name) to include baseball. They were held in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Flag of Nicaragua Nicaragua swept the field, beating Flag of Guatemala Guatemala 3-2, Flag of Costa Rica Costa Rica 7-3, Flag of Panama Panama 7-3 and Flag of El Salvador El Salvador 7-1. Noel Areas was the manager and Argelio Córdoba a coach. Julio Reynosa was either a player or coach. Julio Cuarezma led the team in average (.467) and runs (5), Vicente López (.353) led in doubles (2), Julio Mairena led in RBI (6) and Pablo Juárez (.417), Ernesto López (.353) and Rafael Valle (.300) all topped .300. Claudio Sequeira (0.00) got the win over Guatemala, Julio Espinoza (0.00) beat Panama, Antonio Caneda (1.00) beat El Salvador and Marcos Salas (3.00) got the win over Costa Rica. Other players were Douglas Moody, Skeeter Jarquin, Emir Darce, Wayne Taylor, Armando Muñoz, Antonio Sáenz, Roberto Matute, Porfi Altamirano, Cesar Castro, Cruz Ulloa and Miguel Brown.

Costa Rica's team included Mario Guzmán, Canuto Kennedy and Juan Martínez. Panama (3-1) had Santos Gutiérrez and batting champ Ricardo Barker (.571), Guatemala Noel Ortiz and El Salvador (2-2) had the ERA champ, native Nicaraguan Aubrey Taylor (1 UER in 11 2/3 IP).
