He managed the Nicaraguan national team in five decades, guiding them in the 1974 Amateur World Series (Silver Medal), 1977 Central American Games (Gold), 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games, 1983 Intercontinental Cup, 1983 Pan American Games (another Silver), 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games (the first manager to guide Nicaragua in two Central American and Caribbean Games), 1986 Central American Games (Gold), 1998 Baseball World Cup (Bronze), 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games (Silver), 2003 Baseball World Cup, 2003 Pan American Games, 2013 Central American Games (Gold), 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games (Silver) and 2015 Pan American Games. He also coached for Nicaragua in the 1991 Intercontinental Cup (Bronze). Of Nicaragua's 11 Silver Medals in international competition through 2014 not counting the more limited Central American Games (they had no Golds), Areas had thus managed the club for four of them. His four times guiding Nicaragua in the Central American and Caribbean Games are double runner-up Omar Cisneros. He also had led them to three Central American Games Golds, half of the team's total through 2013.
