Biographical Information

Julio Cuarezma was an outfielder for the Nicaraguan national team.

Cuarezma played in the Nicaraguan amateur I Division from 1970-1978. He was with Nicaragua for the 1970 Central American Junior Championship. He hit .222 in the 1971 Amateur World Series, when Nicaragua won the Bronze Medal. He batted .125 in the 1972 Amateur World Series as Nicaragua again won Bronze. In the 1973 Amateur World Series, Julio hit .241 and his country got the Silver Medal, falling to Team USA in the finale. He was named the All-Star second baseman.

The Managua native led the 1974 Amateur World Series in average (some sources say .470, some .478); Nicaragua again had the Silver, falling to the US. He also led with 9 runs in an event which featured several future major leaguers. He hit .381 in the 1976 Amateur World Series.

Julio starred in the 1977 Intercontinental Cup. He hit .392 with a .745 slugging, 12 RBI and 5 homers; he led the event in RBI and tied for Ernesto López for the most dingers. He was the All-Star center fielder. He starred in the 1977 Central American Games, leading Nicaragua with a .467 average and five runs as they won a Gold. He helped Nicragua win the Silver Medal at the 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games as well.

Signing with the Milwaukee Brewers, he split the summer of 1979 between the Burlington Bees (.207/.289/.263 in 70 G) and Stockton Ports (8 for 29, 3 2B, 3B, 3 BB). He had 38 runs and 29 RBI in 81 games, with 32 walks to 21 strikeouts. He stole 10 bases in 16 tries. Used as an infielder, he fielded .953 in 65 games at 2B, .875 in 13 at 3B and .909 in 4 at SS.

He later played in El Salvador's Liga Superior, leading in average, doubles and hits in 1986. In 2008, he was inducted into Nicaragua's Sports Hall of Fame.
