Biographical Information

César Castro was a star Nicaraguan pitcher in the 1970s.

He was 6-4 with a 2.07 ERA for San Fernando in 1971. In '72, he was 5-13 with two saves and a 3.06 ERA, leading the league in losses and hit batsmen (18). During 1973, he went 11-7 with a save and a 2.01 ERA. His biggest year was 1974, when the workhorse was 16-6 with two saves and a 2.16 ERA. He led Nicaragua in wins, starts (27), IP (191 1/3), hits allowed (13), hit batsmen (14), walks (79), wild pitches (12) and shutouts (4).

He split 1975 between two teams, falling to 10-11, 2.37 with two saves. In 1976, he was 6-8 with a save and a 3.23 ERA. During 1977, he had a 10-5, 2.60 record for San Fernando. He pitched for the Nicaraguan national team that won the 1977 Central American Games. He was 8-5 with 4 saves and a 4.27 ERA in 1978, split between San Fernando and Chindagega.

Castro spent 1979 with San Fernando and had a rough year at 2-10, 5.34, tying for the loss lead. He did not pitch again until 1983, when he was 3-4 with a 2.93 ERA for Granada. He remained with them for 1984 (3-5, 2.62), 1986 (1-2, 3.45) and 1987 (1-0, 3.48), retiring with a record of 82-80, 2.80 and 12 saves in 276 games (163 starts).
