Julio Espinoza was one of the top pitchers in Nicaraguan amateur history.

Espinoza pitched for Nicaragua when they won Bronze in the 1975 Intercontinental Cup. He had a 0.00 ERA for Nicaragua when they won the 1977 Central American Games and beat rival Panama. He pitched for Nicaragua in the 1977 Intercontinental Cup and 1984 Olympics. He led the Nicaraguan league in saves six times (a record through 2012) and also started frequently. His 21 wins in 1977 tied Porfi Altamirano for second in league history to that point (Altamirano also won 21 in 1977). Through 2008, he was first in Nicaraguan history in strikeouts (1,449, 183 ahead of Asdrudes Flores), third in innings (2,002), tied for third in losses (107, behind Flores and Diego Raudez), second in wins (155, two behind Flores), second in saves (63, two shy of the leader), third in complete games (101), first in games pitched (488, 71 ahead of Raudez).
