1975 Intercontinental Cup

The 1975 Intercontinental Cup was the second Intercontinental Cup. It was held from August 14 through August 31, 1975. The first week was played at Kiwanis Park in Moncton, NB, while the second week was played at Jarry Park in Montréal, QC. It was organized by the Federación Mundial de Béisbol Amateur during the FIBA-FEMBA dispute in international baseball.

Canada was 4-5 as the host, finishing fourth. They lost the Bronze Medal game by only one run to Nicaragua, just missing their first Medal in a major event. Knuckleballer John Osborne was 2-0 on the hill.

Colombia was last at 0-7.

Italy placed seventh of eight teams at 2-5, beating only Colombia and Canada.

Japan took home the Silver Medal with a 7-2 record. They lost the Gold Medal game 8-0 to Team USA, the only club to beat them. Tadanori Murakami led the event in average (.588) while Yoshihiro Maekawa led in homers (3) and RBI (11) and tied for the most hits (14).

Nicaragua won Bronze despite a losing record of 4-5. They beat Canada 5-4 in the Bronze Medal game. Skeeter Jarquin led the tournament with two triples.

Puerto Rico went 3-4 to tie for 5th.

South Korea also was 3-4, tying Puerto Rico for 5th. Peter Bjarkman lists that L. Chung led the Cup with four steals but they had no such player - Hai-chang Lee is the closest name.

United States went unbeaten, going 9-0, to take their first Cup title. Ron Hassey led the Cup with 9 runs and tied for the most hits, 14. Jerry Mondalto led with four doubles. Scott Sanderson led in ERA (0.60) and tied for the best record (2-0). The team included Hall-of-Fame-bound Paul Molitor. Dick Bergquist was their manager.
