User talk:Randy

From BR Bullpen

Randy, I think your articles are getting very good. Two areas you could improve upon - 1) Adding high school information to the demographics section (right underneath colleges attended or in lieu of colleges attended) either in place of or in addition to in the text of the article itself. 2) Adding links to minor league teams. Instead of writing Denver, Denver Bears takes an extra couple seconds and allows folks to jump from page to page more readily.

Keep up the fine work. - --Mischa 21:44, 12 September 2006 (EDT)

Also, you can link to the specific league i.e. Western League instead of "the league". I do think the articles look much better with the blurbs you are adding than they did blank.

Randy, can you surround your quotes with

to improve readability. Only the quote (or quotee) could be italized for the same reason. Also, for other uses such as George Washington, I have created a Template:OtherUses just for that purpose (it goes at the top of the article). Thanks. --MichaelEng 23:44, 17 September 2006 (EDT)

There were pages for the "Howard Berry"/"Joe Berry"s - oddly, the main Bullpen site lists them as Howard and here they're Joe. I redirected Howard #1 and moved your content and will try to do the same with #2 later. - --Mischa 13:00, 17 December 2006 (EST)

Randy, the folks at attheplate.com have notified us that you directly copied a quote from their page about Sterling Slaughter. Sean removed this. Please either cite sources or be careful in using material from other places (rewording, paraphrasing, etc.) It is best of course to do both to avoid any risks of plagiarism.

Keep up the nice work overall. Good job on getting a basic bio up on a lot of pages. - --Mischa 10:33, 19 March 2007 (EDT)

When listing All-American honors, please list the source. There is no official All-American list and several diffretent groups list different players. - --Mischa 10:09, 19 April 2007 (EDT)

Fergy Malone[edit]

I had rolled back the "pre-MLB player" category addition, which accidentally led to the removal of your previous edits. Just Me restored the article. I apologize. - --Mischa 08:29, 21 June 2007 (EDT)

Randy, had two league pages butchered up - North carolina State League at 21:33 and Florida State League at 22:17. I am not sure I got them back in the right history. I do not have that much knowledge at that type of thing and Mischa is not on. Can you take a look.--Dugout 21:06, 14 July 2007 (EDT) it was pure vandalism!

Team Reviews[edit]

Thanks for the 2007 team summaries! - --Mischa 18:12, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

You're welcome - although I just noticed that I jumped the gun on the Dodgers - they still have at least one more inning to play, so some of the stats are not final yet! - Randy 18:23, 30 September 2007 (EDT)

Cool Names Category[edit]

The category was abolished due to widespread concern about subjectivity. See Category_talk:Cool_Names - --Mischa 12:16, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Return[edit]

Welcome back. Hope you had a nice summer. - --Mischa 10:58, 14 September 2008 (EDT)

Mischa, thanks. Other than that my computer died on me and a few other things that forced me offline, it was OK . . . . Randy 23:25, 16 September 2008 (EDT)

There is a lot of dispute about "first black player" lists. Usually they included only African-Americans, but several folks have noted dark-skinned Latinos who were also banned from baseball before the color line - see Chuck Harmon/Nino Escalera for instance. I tend to agree with the folks advocating for the inclusion of dark-skinned Latinos.

Adjusted OPS[edit]

We've had a long and back forth over whether "Adjusted OPS+" is redundant. Here is how Total Baseball defines "OPS+": "Production Plus, or Adjusted Production (On-Base Percentage plus Slugging Average, normalized to league average and adjusted for home-park factor). So OPS+ is the same as Adjusted OPS and Adjusted OPS+ is redundant. This is from pg. 555 from the the 7th edition of Total Baseball. - --Mischa 13:19, 12 April 2009 (EDT)

OK, that's cool, it's quicker to type OPS+. I just wanted to make sure we got both the park factor *and* the normalization. - Randy 13:31, 12 April 2009 (EDT)

Mike Palagyi[edit]

Where is the quote in Tellis' book? I can't seem to find it in there. And Palagyi doesn't have his own chapter? --Jeff 00:51, 4 December 2009 (EST)

Please comment on BR Bullpen:Featured Article Candidates/Lou Brissie - --Mischa 12:20, 4 December 2009 (EST)

About Mike Palagyi, it was a long time ago when I did that, but here is a reference: I threw but 2 strikes out of 15 pitches -- a very short big league career, Palagyi told Richard Tellis, author of Once Around the Bases (Triumph Books, 1998), which chronicles the stories of 40 players who lasted a single game. - from a New York Times article. That doesn't mean the quote was actually in the book, although it implies it; however, since I don't recall my research from back then, we might as well use the New York Times reference instead. - Randy 14:17, 4 December 2009 (EST)

Duster Mails teaching Bill Wight delivery and pick off move in KC in 1933[edit]

Bill Wight was born in 1922, which would make him 11 years old. Hopefully the date you listed is a typo. I am new to this site and enjoying the details.

You might like Major League Baseball Profiles: 1871-1900 if you hadn't bought it yet, given your interest in the 19th Century game. - --Mischa (talk) 11:51, 25 October 2013 (EDT)

Welcome back!! - Mischa (talk) 16:53, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

I think the Bullpen is here 14 years. I did go away briefly in 2014 and when I came back, I tried to cut back on how much work I was putting in as I was taking on too much. - Mischa (talk) 17:01, 5 June 2019 (UTC)

Glad to see you back and contributing interesting stuff. I would simply suggest that you avoid using the present too much in articles about current players, as this quickly makes the article appear out of date even if all of the contents are correct. Try to write as if you were a couple of years in the future writing about what went down this year. Philippe (talk) 14:37, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

I didn't roll back the Van Slyke edit; I moved your contributions to lower in the article to make it more chronological. - Mischa (talk) 16:07, 26 July 2019 (UTC)

Tom Stanton[edit]

There's a discussion going on on the SABR-L discussion group about Tom Stanton, as there are discrepancies between sources regarding this player, and the information now on his page contradicts that provided by SABR's biographical information committee back in 2011 (which is linked as a source). You made significant changes on this page in October 2020 without providing a source. I don't doubt that your information is correct, If you have a source, I could edit the article to reflect the evolution of knowledge about this player. Philippe (talk) 09:04, 1 January 2024 (UTC)

The changes I made are all sourced from BR. It shows that Tom was born and died in St. Louis, that Kling missed a week at catcher (he did pinch-hit once), that Tom played on April 19, and that Chance played one day. All of this information is readily available from game logs and Tom's page. - Randy (talk) 22:16, 3 April 2024 (UTC)
