Biographical Information[edit]

Tim Lopes reached the majors in 2019; his brother Christian Lopes has also played in the majors.

Tim was taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 6th round of the 2012 amateur draft, one round after another shortstop, Chris Taylor. John Ramey was the scout. He had a strong pro debut with the AZL Mariners, hitting .316/.381/.479 with an impressive 12 triples in 53 games. Promoted to the High Desert Mavericks, he was 3 for 12 with yet another triple. He led the Arizona League in triples by five ahead of Lewis Brinson and Jose Pena. His 42 runs tied Dorssys Paulino for 4th in the AZL and his 68 hits tied Ronald Guzman for the lead. Despite playing only half a year, he had the most three-baggers in the M's chain, one ahead of James Jones.

With the 2013 Clinton Lumber Kings, he hit .272/.315/.344 with only three triples in 92 games before a season-ending rotator cuff injury, while fielding .963 at second base. He moved up to the High Desert Mavericks in 2014, hitting .238/.308/.337 with 7 triples and 18 steals in 25 tries. He fielded .978 at 2B, leading California League second basemen with 322 assists. He tied for 8th in the circuit in triples and tied Taylor and Dario Pizzano for 4th in the M's chain. He repeated in the Cal League in 2015 and made progress, hitting .276/.340/.362 for the Bakersfield Blaze. He stole 35 bases but was caught 18 times. He also saw action at SS and 3B in addition to his usual 2B. He was among the Cal League leaders in steals (1st, four ahead of Aaron Barbosa), caught stealing (2nd, one behind Bo Way) and sacrifice hits (14, tied for first). Among Seattle minor leaguers, he was first in sacrifice bunts, 4th in steals and tied Ian Miller for the most times caught running.

In 2016, he hit .284/.358/.355 with 26 steals in 32 tries and 74 runs for the Jackson Generals while fielding .985 at second base. He was 7th in the Southern League in average (between Victor Caratini and Dustin Peterson), 5th in runs and tied with Jacob Hannemann for 6th in steals. Among Mariners farmhands, he was 5th in runs (between Chantz Mack and Gianfranco Wawoe), second in steals (23 behind Miller) and first in hits (145, one more than Tyler O'Neill). He was named to the SL All-Star team as the second baseman.

He and his brother were originally announced as part of the Brazilian national team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, but were late scratches.

Tim made his major league debut for the Mariners on July 24, 2019. In his first start, the next day, he was beaned by a 91 mph fastball from Detroit Tigers p Drew VerHagen in the 3rd inning, and eventually had to leave the game in the 7th.
