Biographical Information[edit]

Starting pitcher Drew VerHagen made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2014.

He had a 3.38 ERA in six games for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2010. He was 0-1 with a 1.66 ERA for the Hyannis Mets in the Cape Cod League. Transferring to Navarro College, he helped the school win the NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series in 2011. Transferring to Vanderbilt University for 2012, he went 6-3 with two saves and a 3.50 ERA in 27 outings. He was taken by the Tigers in the 4th round of the 2012 amateur draft as Detroit's third selection overall, following Jake Thompson, who went to the same high school as he had, and Austin Schotts. The scout was Harold Zonder.

He pitched for the GCL Tigers (2 R in 4 IP) and Lakeland Flying Tigers (0-3, 3.67) in the summer of 2012, going 0-3 with a 3.48 ERA in 10 games (6 starts). Entering the 2013 season, he was ranked the Tigers' 17th-best prospect by MLB.com and #14 according to Baseball America. With Lakeland (5-3, 2.81) and the Erie SeaWolves (2-5, 3.00) in 2013, he was 7-8 with a 2.90 ERA in 24 games (23 starts). Among Tiger minor leaguers with 100+ IP, only Jose Alvarez had a better ERA.

He made his major league debut for the Tigers on July 19, 2014, losing 6-2 as a starting pitcher against the Cleveland Indians; it was his only game in the majors that season. He made another one-off appearance, this time as a reliever, on July 5, 2015, giving up two runs in one inning before going back to the minors. He returned for good in mid-August, and made 10 appearances as a reliever, lowering his ERA to 1.76, before he earned his first major league win on September 13th when he made his second career start and defeated the Indians, 9-2, in the second game of a doubleheader.
