Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Dustin Peterson was selected by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 2013 amateur draft. That same year, his brother D.J. Peterson was taken in the first round by the Seattle Mariners. Dustin soon signed for a bonus of $1.4 million and made his pro debut with the AZL Padres on June 20th, going 0-for-4 against the AZL Mariners.
On December 19, 2014, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves with Max Fried, Jace Peterson and Mallex Smith in return for OF Justin Upton. On May 13, 2015, he was involved in a scary accident as the Carolina Mudcats' team bus was travelling from Salem, VA to Myrtle Beach, SC, when the bus veered off the road, hit a berm, became airborne, flipped and landed on its side. No one was killed, but Peterson was among those seriously injured, as he suffered a badly bruised neck - something of which he was originally unaware, as he managed to walk away from the wreckage, albeit with a very stiff neck. He was lucky not to have been decapitated, but the injury led to a long stay on the disabled list, and he did not fully recover until the following season.
He was called up to Atlanta on May 28, 2018 after rookie phenom Ronald Acuna had been placed on the disabled list with a sprained knee. In his debut, he struck out as a pinch-hitter against Jeurys Familia of the New York Mets to make the final out of an 8-5 loss in the second game of a doubleheader. He made an out in his only other at-bat for the Braves that year. On September 6th, he was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers and while he did not play for them in 2018, he made their opening day roster in 2019. His first appearance was a start in left field against the Toronto Blue Jays on March 30th, when he went 0 for 4. His first major league hit was a memorable one: on April 2nd he hit a double off Aroldis Chapman of the New York Yankees to break a 1-1 tie in the 9th. He then came to score on a single by Jordy Mercer as Detroit won the game, 3-1.
