Biographical Information

Jordy Mercer was a third-round draft choice in the 2008 amateur draft and is a former member of Team USA.

Mercer was All-State in high school and was picked in the 26th round of the 2005 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He opted for college. As a freshman at Oklahoma State University, he hit .270/.321/.405 and was 5-0 with 5 saves and a 4.74 ERA in 12 appearances on the mound. He was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference utility man. The shortstop-pitcher batted .299/.370/.481 as a sophomore after missing time with a knee injury; on the hill, he was 3-1 with 3 saves and a 3.81 ERA. He was dropped to second team All-Big 12 as a utility man.

Mercer joined Team USA's college edition for the summer of 2007. He had a fine summer on the mound, striking out 18 and allowing 10 hits and a walk in 16 innings while having a 1.12 ERA, 4th on the staff. At the plate, he was less effective, hitting .250 and slugging .338. He threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in the 2007 Pan American Games and went 2 for 4 for the Silver Medal winners. In the 2007 World Port Tournament, Jordy hit .333/.467/.417 with 7 runs in 8 games and pitched a scoreless frame. He was 7th in the tournament in average, 10th in slugging, second to Jordan Danks in OBP, 4th in runs, tied for the lead in steals (2) and tied for second with 7 doubles.

Mercer saved 9 games in 16 appearances in 2008 but was 0-2 with a 5.82 ERA; he hit .330/.373/.542 with 14 home runs and 60 RBI in 62 games. He was a first-team All-Big 12 Conference pick as a utility man and second-team at shortstop and became OSU's all-time save leader with 17. The Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the third round of the 2008 amateur draft, the 79th overall pick. He was signed by scout Matt Bimeal for $508,000 and assigned to the State College Spikes. Jordy debuted as a pro on June 20th against the Auburn Doubledays and was 0 for 4 with a stolen base.
