History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2019 Detroit Tigers started off the season with frozen bats, as they were unable to score any runs in the regular innings in any of their first three games. Luckily for them, Opening Day starter Jordan Zimmermann gave them a great performance, pitching a perfect game for 6 2/3 innings, and the Tigers were able to pull off a 2-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays thanks to a two-run homer by Christin Stewart in the 10th inning. However, there was no such redemption in the next two games, as they suffered defeats of 6-0 and 3-0 and were completely stymied by the Jays' pitchers.

It was a long and difficult season for the Tigers, who were clearly in full rebuilding mode and giving extended auditions to young players. It did not hep that their veterans failed to show much leadership: after his solid performance on Opening Day, Zimmermann went into an extended funk and was 1-10 with a 6.27 ERA after 20 starts; Miguel Cabrera, confined by age to the DH spot, had lost his power and only had 10 homers by early September. Their two best mature players, reliever Shane Greene, their sole All-Star, and RF Nicholas Castellanos, had both been dealt at the trading deadline. On September 8th, a 3-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics was their 100th of the season, the first time they had reached the unenviable total since 2003, when they had set a franchise record with 119 losses. They finished with the worst record in the majors, at 47-114.
