Biographical Information[edit]

Christian Lopes is the brother of Tim Lopes. The two were briefly together in the Toronto Blue Jays system after Christian was drafted by the Jays in the 7th round of the 2011 amateur draft and Tim was traded to Toronto after the 2016 season, but they were never on the same team as Christian became a free agent following the 2017 season that he spent mainly with the AAA Buffalo Bisons. He then moved around to the Texas Rangers, Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Oakland Athletics signed him as a free agent on March 11, 2022 just as spring training was starting after the conclusion of the 2021-2022 lockout. At that point, he was a veteran of ten minor league seasons, including the last five in AAA, and another one spent at the Marlins' alternative training site when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues in 2020. Before that, he had been on professional radar screens all the way back to when he was 12 years old and was named U-13 Player of the Year by National Youth Baseball. He played on the U.S. national youth teams in both their 16U and 18U configurations. He hit .267/.389/.400 with five runs and four RBI in five games in the 2010 World Junior Championship, as a teammate of Francisco Lindor and Michael Lorenzen; he had 16 chances error-free. He was signed by the A's to provide organizational depth, and that was rapidly needed when the team was hit by a slew of COVID-19 cases in mid-April. He was called up on April 20th and made his debut the same day when he pinch-hit for Billy McKinney in the 6th inning and then played the remainder of the game in right field in a 1-0 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He was 0 for 9 for the '22 A's.

He and his brother were originally announced as part of the Brazilian national team for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, but were late scratches. They did make Brazil's team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He was 2-for-16 with a walk, run and team-leading three RBI.
