Biographical Information[edit]
Tim Ireland had only a brief major league career, appearing in 11 games for the Kansas City Royals in 1981 and 1982 and going 1 for 7 with 3 runs scored. He played four different positions in the majors - first base, second base, right field and third base - in his brief stay, a reflection of how he was used during his long minor league career, which lasted from 1973 to 1985. In the minors, he played all four infield positions and the outfield, with second base being his most regular spot. He was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 25th round of the 1973 amateur draft, but moved around a lot during his professional career. In 1983 and 1984, he was in Nippon Pro Baseball with the Hiroshima Carp.
In 1989, he played for the Fort Myers Sun Sox of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. Ireland played in 67 games and led the league in batting with a .374 batting average.
Ireland was the manager for the co-op Salinas Spurs in 1989 and a coach for the Phoenix Firebirds in 1990. After managing for 6 more seasons, he was a scout for the Colorado Rockies in 1998 (signing Manuel Corpas) and the Rockies Pacific Rim Scouting Coordinator in 1999-2000, signing Chin-hui Tsao. He also managed Taipei Gida in the Taiwan Major League He then returned to managing, but spent 2005 as the Texas Rangers Minor League Baserunning/bunting coordinator. He later returned to his scouting work in Asia as the Pacific Rim Scouting Coordinator for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
