Biographical Information

Theron Todd reached AA as a player then was a long-time coach and a manager. He was the first player to lead the revived Northern League in hits and doubles.

Todd was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 21st round of the 1987 amateur draft, two picks before Dennis Springer. He hit .273/.333/.439 with 10 homers and 45 RBI in 70 games for the Pulaski Braves as a rookie. He tied three future major leaguers (Beau Allred, Rod Brewer and Troy Neel) for 4th in the Appalachian League in dingers, led in game-winning RBI (7) and was 4th in RBI (after Ed Fulton, Neel and Tracey Pancoski).

Moving up to the Durham Bulls, he produced at a .246/.337/.415 clip in 1988, with 62 walks, 70 runs and 18 home runs. He was second in the Carolina League in home runs (3 shy of Mickey Pina). Several biographical sources list him as making the Carolina League All-Star team but neither the 1989 Baseball Guide nor 1989 Baseball Almanac lists him as such with Bernie Williams, Bob Zupcic and Pina as the All-Star outfielders (the Almanac also lists Derrick May and Mike Westbrook as utility outfielders).

In 1989, Theron hit .254/.302/.396 for Durham, with his homer total dropping to 11, though he drove in 79. He finished second in RBI, a distant 26 behind Phil Plantier. Among Braves farmhands, he was second to Brian Hunter in RBI, just three off the pace. Todd was back for a third year with Durham in 1990, batting .255/.340/.358.

Let go by Atlanta, he signed with the independent Salt Lake City Trappers for 1991 and hit .317/.416/.508 with 38 RBI in 52 games. He was 14-for-17 in steals and had 33 walks to 21 whiffs. He was 8th in the high-offense Pioneer League in slugging and helped the Trappers to the title. In 1992, he was signed by the Seattle Mariners, spending time with the San Bernardino Suns (.336/.397/.515 in 40 G) and Jacksonville Suns (.176/.211/.271 in 23 G).

When the independent leagues began in 1993, Todd joined the Sioux Falls Canaries and hit .337/.402/.465 with 26 doubles and 49 runs in 72 games. He finished third in the Northern League in average (behind Kash Beauchamp and J.D. Ramirez), tied Nolan Lane and Ty Griffin for third in runs, led with 97 hits (8 ahead of Gary Resetar and Warren Sawkiw), led in doubles by five, tied Sawkiw for third in RBI, ranked 9th in slugging and was 8th in OPS. In 641 games as a pro, the outfielder had batted .273/.345/.419 with 58 home runs, 336 runs, 346 RBI and 73 steals in 114 tries.

Todd joined the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1993 as a minor league hitting coach. He was hitting coach for the 1994 GCL Pirates. In 1996-1997, he was hitting coach for the Stockton Ports. He managed the 1998 Canton Crocodiles to a 41-38 record. He was hitting coach for the 1999-2002 Carolina Mudcats and 2003 Asheville Tourists. In 2005, he was hitting coach for the Idaho Falls Chukars. He was an assistant coach for the University of North Florida in 2006. In 2008, he was a coach for Carolina again, followed by a stint with the Jacksonville Suns in 2009.
