Biographical Information

Sam Steigert has pitched for the German national team.

In the 2015 European Junior Championship, he was the starting shortstop for Germany and hit .353/.400/.471 with 9 RBI in five games, though he fielded .826. He tied for 2nd in the event in RBI, 5 behind Marek Chlup and tied for 6th with four errors. In the next year's European Junior Championship, he moved to third base and hit .360/.360/.440 while handling 14 chances error-free. In 2017, he starred for the Neuenburg Atomics in the southern Bundesliga-2. He hit .405/.519/.532 with 29 RBI, 30 runs and 27 steals in 24 games, fielding .975 at SS and went 4-0 with four saves and a 2.68 ERA for the league champs. He led in saves, steals, assists, shortstop fielding percentage and RBI and was 2nd in hits and runs, 3rd in OBP, tied for 3rd in walks (21), 4th in ERA, tied for 5th in wins and 5th in OPS. Going to the US for college, he was 0-2 with 3 saves and a 4.71 ERA in 2018.

He was just as dominant for the Atomics in 2018 at .492 with a .575 OBP and a 7-2, 2.74 record. He tied for first in triples (4), led in OBP, was second in average, 2nd in WHIP (.96), tied for 2nd in wins, tied for 2nd in steals (14), 3rd in slugging, 3rd in OPS and 3rd in ERA. He was 2-1 with a 8.61 ERA his second year at Auburn-Montgomery and went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk. Back in Germany for the remainder of the season, he hit .415/.444/.677 and was 5-0 with four saves and a 1.45 ERA. He was 2nd in triples (5), 3rd in slugging, 1st in ERA, 1st in saves and tied for 7th in wins.

Pitching for Germany in the 2019 U-23 European Championship, he was 1-0 with no runs in five innings in a win against Belgium and Jace Van Droogenbroeck. He had one walk, one run and one RBI on offense. He then debuted for the German senior national team despite having never played in Bundesliga-1, a very rare occurrence. He debuted in the opener against Sweden, relieving Twins farmhand Niklas Rimmel in the 3rd with a 4-1 lead, two on and two out. He got out of that jam by retiring Peter Johannessen. He cruised from there, allowing only two hits (to Alex Rubanowitz and Pontus Byström) and no runs over the next five innings to get the win; Julius Spann closed it out. Against Israel, he relieved Lukas Steinlein in the 10th with a 3-2 deficit, one out and the bases loaded. He allowed a sacrifice fly to Benny Wanger then retired Rob Paller. He pitched against Italy, trying to protect a 5-3 lead in the 6th, relieving Luke Sommer with two on and no outs. This game did not go as well. Mattia Reginato reached on a fielder's choice, then Federico Celli hit a sac fly. Sebastiano Poma singled to load the bases, then Drew Maggi hit a sacrifice fly to tie it. He recovered to blank Italy in the 7th and 8th. He started the 9th by retiring former major leaguers John Andreoli and Chris Colabello but walked Giuseppe Mazzanti then served up the game-losing homer to Alberto Mineo. For the first two rounds of the Euros, only Sascha Koch had a better ERA among Germany's qualifiers. Among all players, he was 9th in opponent average (.194, between Joey Wagman and Pavao Karin), and just missed the top 10 in ERA (11th). He then got some work in the 5th/6th place game against the Czech national team with a spot in the 2019 Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifiers at stake. He relieved Sven Schüller in the 3rd with a 2-0 lead, two on and one out. He got Matěj Hejma on a grounder but Martin Červenka hit a big three-run shot. He struck out Petr Čech to end the inning, then Rimmel relieved in the 4th.

He was 1-0 with a save and a 4.94 ERA in college in 2019-2020.
