Biographical Information[edit]
Lukas Steinlein has played in the Bundesliga-1.
Steinlein was in the MLB European Academy in 2009. In the 2009 European Junior Championship, he hit .389/.476/.444 with four RBI in three games. He made his Bundesliga-1 debut that year as well, hitting only .130/.230/.167 as the regular second baseman for the Haar Disciples, but fielded .986. With Haar in 2010, he improved his hitting (.293/.359/.341) but his fielding fell off (.875). He tied for 4th in the southern Bundesliga-1 with 14 errors (regardless of position).
In 2011, Steinlein produced at a .238/.327/.274 clip with 19 runs in 24 games, fielding .910 at 2B. He also pitched briefly (1-0, 3.24). He tied for 5th in the league with 11 miscues. He hit .260/.426/.351 in 2012, fielded .894 and was 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA. He was 4th with 70 assists and tied teammate Christoph Ziegler for second with 12 errors. Lukas batted .263/.344/.295 in 2013, stole 13 bases in 14 tries and fielded .919. Pitching more often, he was 4-3 with a 3.14 ERA and 51 BB in 77 1/3 IP. He was among the league leaders on offense (tying Max Boldt with 26 runs, third in steals behind Chris Beck and Jamie McOwen and second in steal percentage behind McOwen) and pitching (9th in ERA, 5th in walks and tying Thomas De Wolf for 3rd with 10 hit batsmen).
The Nürnberg native was a LF/P/2B for the 2014 Disciples, hitting .189/.282/.211 and going 3-4 with a 3.58 ERA. He was 9th in ERA (betwen Johannes Krumm and Cedric Desmedt), 5th in innings pitched, second in walks (40) and led in hit batsmen (12). He also spent his third winter playing in South Africa. In '15, Steinlein was now more of a pitcher (5-3, 3 Sv, 3.61) than a position player (backing up in LF and hitting .176/.293/.206). He tied Michael Torrealba for 8th in wins, was 8th in ERA (between Jan-Niclas Stöcklin and Kevin Trisl), ranked 6th in WHIP (1.30) and tied Marcel Hering and Manuel Möller for the save lead.
Steinlein made the German national team roster for the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Mexico in March 2016. He was one of three pitchers they did not use; the others were youngsters Lucas Dickman and Sascha Koch. Steinlein saw little action for Haar in 2016, going 1-1 with two saves and a 2.03 ERA, walking 9 in 13 1/3 IP. He was 5 for 25 with four walks on offense. He did make his debut with Germany for the 2016 European Championship, relieving Jonathan Eisenhuth in a 10-2 loss to the Netherlands. He walked three but allowed no hits in two shutout innings. In his other outing, he relieved Andre Hughes with a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 8th against Spain. He retired Oscar Angulo but then allowed a hit to former major leaguer Engel Beltre and a walk to Jesús Golindano. Max Schmitz relieved and served up a game-losing homer, charging Steinlein with two runs and the defeat.
