Team History

Formed in 1857, the New York Mutuals team was formed too late to participate in the inaugural season of the first National Association. Originally the team shared its home games at Elysian Fields with teams like the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club. In 1868 they moved to the enclosed Union Grounds in Brooklyn, NY where they would share home field with Atlantics and the Eckfords. The Mutuals were one of the founding teams in the second National Association] in 1871 and later played in the National League. Due to financial difficulties, the team was not able to make the trip out west at the end of the league's inaugural 1876 season. As a result, it was expelled from the league. The Mutuals' sole claim to fame in its brief stint in the National League was the execution of the first triple play in a 28-3 loss to the Dark Blues of Hartford on May 13th.
