Biographical Information[edit]

George Flanly was the Brooklyn Excelsiors' starting center fielder in 1860. He is most notable for starting his baseball career as a 14-year-old in 1858 with the Niagara club, but jumped to the Excelsiors later that year along with Jim Creighton and John Whiting. He was supposedly the man to whom Jim Creighton told "I think I ripped my belt" after hitting the home run that killed him a few days later, to which Flanly replied "Guess not," upon seeing that Creighton's belt was fine. He remained in the National Association of Base Ball Players for many more years and worked as an umpire in the league for a while. He played his final game in 1869 with the New York Mutuals.
