Biographical Information[edit]
John Whiting played third base for the Brooklyn Excelsiors from 1858 to 1861. He started his baseball career sometime in the 1850s, and had four brothers who played baseball during that time too (the only one known by name is Charles). John Whiting was a member of the Brooklyn Stars team as well as the Niagara club and jumped to the Excelsiors along with two teammates, Jim Creighton and George Flanly. He retired from baseball after 1861, and manufactured baseballs for a living after that. In 1862, he joined the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, Whiting became an investment broker and died at his daughter's house on September 26, 1929. He was the last living member of the 1860 Excelsiors team.
