Biographical Information[edit]
Dave Eggler was a center fielder who played eleven seasons in the majors. He was a premier player in the National Association. He was an above average hitter with a 133 OPS+. Eggler was also a solid fielder, with Total Zone Rating grading him as a positive defender each NA season.
Eggler's best season was 1872 when he led the league in stolen bases, runs scored, and outfield assists, was second in hits, and ninth in OPS+.
He finished his career playing several seasons with the Buffalo Bisons, alongside The Big Four. He was a year younger than Deacon White, but older than the rest of the team.
He was playing baseball as early as 1868, with the New York Mutuals. The book When Johnny Comes Sliding Home indicates that on June 15, 1868, Eggler's Mutuals played the Cincinnati Red Stockings in front of 10,000 fans in New York. He was also on the Mutuals in 1869 and 1870.
Eggler died in 1902 after being run over by a train.
