Biographical Information

Ed Duffy played for the New York Eagles (1860); the Brooklyn Eckfords (1863) and the New York Mutuals (1864-1865). In 1865, while playing for the then-amateur New York Mutuals, Ed Duffy accepted thirty dollars from gamber Kane McLoughlin to throw a game against the Eckfords. He and two teammates were caught, Duffy confessed, and he and his cohorts were expelled from baseball. Bill Wansley, the catcher, was charged with six passed balls and the Mutuals lost 23-11. All three were banned from baseball, but, due primarily to immense pressure from the powerful New York club, Tom Devyr was quickly reinstated. Wansley and Duffy were both reinstated in 1870.

Duffy then appeared for the Brooklyn Eckfords (1870); the Chicagoes (1870); and the Chicago White Stockings of the National Association (1871).
