Biographical Information[edit]

Tom Devyr played for the Brooklyn Eckfords (1862-1863), the New York Mutuals (1864-1865; 1867-1869) and the Brooklyn Eckfords again (1869-1870). In 1865, three New York Mutuals players (Devyr, Bill Wansley, and Ed Duffy) were paid $100 by gambler Kane McLoughlin to throw a game against the Eckfords. The Mutuals lost 23-11. All three were banned from baseball, but, due primarily to immense pressure from the powerful New York club, Devyr was quickly reinstated. Bill Wansley and Ed Duffy were both later reinstated in 1870.
